Each year on May 18, museums around the world celebrate International Museum Day, an initiative led by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Since 1977, this day has highlighted the important role museums play as spaces of cultural exchange, education, and community connection.
The 2026 theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” emphasizes the unique role museums play in fostering dialogue, understanding, inclusion, and peace. Museums act as trusted public spaces where people can encounter different perspectives, explore shared histories, and build connections across cultures and generations.
Here in Callander, the Callander Bay Heritage Museum & Alex Dufresne Gallery reflects this mission at a local level. Located in the historic former home of Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, the museum shares the story of the Dionne Quintuplets alongside exhibits on local industries, community life, and the history of Callander.
Through its collections, rotating art exhibitions, and community programming, the museum continues to preserve and celebrate Callander’s heritage while creating a welcoming space for learning and connection.
We encourage everyone to visit the museum, explore our shared history, and take part in this global celebration.
