Flood Warning for our area
A Flood Warning is in effect until Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. for areas along the Upper Ottawa River (from Lake Timiskaming to east of Papineau‑Cameron Township, including Mattawa) and the shoreline of Lake Nipissing.
Water levels and flows are high and rising due to ongoing spring snowmelt in northern areas and significant rain expected today. Flooding is already happening in some locations and may occur in others.
What’s causing this?
- Up to 20 mm of rain is forecast, with more possible during thunderstorms.
- Warmer temperatures recently sped up snowmelt.
- The ground is saturated, so it cannot absorb much more water.
- Dam outflows on the Upper Ottawa River are being increased to manage reservoir levels.
Current conditions of concern
- In the Mattawa area, Upper Ottawa River water levels may reach the start of flood damage levels in the coming days.
- Lake Nipissing is already above its normal non‑damage level, increasing flood risk along the shoreline.
What this means for residents
- Homes, cottages, boathouses, docks, and other structures in low‑lying or flood‑prone areas may be at risk.
- Shorelines are slippery and unstable, and cold, fast‑moving water is dangerous.
- Children and pets should be closely supervised near water.
What you should do
- Monitor local conditions and weather forecasts closely.
- Prepare for possible flooding if you live near water or in a low‑lying area.
- Use extreme caution around rivers, lakes, and streams.
